Combining laser ablation and Sol-Gel techniques for the synthesis of nanostructured organic-inorganic matrices

In this work we report a new and simple method that combines the pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) and the Sol-Gel techniques to obtain nanocomposite glasses and gelatins. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) are generated by PLAL using the corresponding target. The target is submerged in a transparent liquid solution made previously...

Maximal cross-ratio degree for 8 points in $\mathbb{P}^1$

The cross-ratio degree problem asks for the number of configurations of $n$ points in $\mathbb{P}^1$ that satisfy $n-3$ specified cross-ratio conditions. It is known that the maximal cross-ratio degree for 8 points is at least 4. In this paper, we will see that the maximal cross-ratio degree for 8 points in $\mathbb{P}^1$ is equal to 4.

A Structure-Preserving Scheme for the Time-Dependent Ginzburg-Landau Model with BCS Gap Coupling

We propose a structure-preserving scheme for a hybrid model that couples the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation of superconducting vortex dynamics and the nonlinear Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) gap equation. This formulation is consistent with the classical TDGL equation in the near-critical temperature, while extending...

A Magnus group construction for a class of Borcherds algebras

We construct a group associated to a class of Borcherds algebras that admit a direct sum decomposition into a Kac--Moody (or semi-simple) subalgebra and a pair of free Lie subalgebras. Such Borcherds algebras have no mutually orthogonal imaginary simple roots. Our group is a semi-direct product of a Kac--Moody (or semi-simple) group...

Learning collision operators from plasma phase space data using differentiable simulators

We propose a methodology to infer collision operators from phase space data of plasma dynamics. Our approach combines a differentiable kinetic simulator, whose core component in this work is a differentiable Fokker-Planck solver, with a gradient-based optimisation method to learn the collisional operators that best describe the phase...

The meaning of closeness to women and/or LGBTQ+ physicists: a social network analysis

'Closeness' is well-defined as a quantitative measure of centrality in social network analysis (SNA), but it is not as well defined qualitatively as a description of social relationships. This paper presents a qualitative analysis of 'closeness' as it is defined both implicitly and explicitly in interviews with 100 women and/or LGBTQ+...

Rotation angle sensing via polarization-dependent mode superposition in a hollow-core fiber with two-fold symmetry

Hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCF) have experienced tremendous advancements recently, leading to remarkable demonstrations of transmission loss reduction and deeper understanding of their guidance fundamentals. Indeed, this progress has entailed investigations into various HCPCF designs, allowing for attaining diverse...

Activation Sensitivity as a Unifying Principle for Post-Training Quantization

Post-training quantization (PTQ) methods for large language models rely on heuristics that implicitly estimate which weight channels most strongly influence model behavior. Two dominant paradigms have emerged: activation-aware methods such as AWQ prioritize channels with large activation magnitudes, while second-order methods such as...

Two Complexity Results on Spanning-Tree Congestion Problems

In the spanning-tree congestion problem ($\mathsf{STC}$), we are given a graph $G$, and the objective is to compute a spanning tree of $G$ that minimizes the maximum edge congestion. While $\mathsf{STC}$ is known to be $\mathbb{NP}$-hard, even for some restricted graph classes, several key questions regarding its computational...

Medical SAM3: A Foundation Model for Universal Prompt-Driven Medical Image Segmentation

Promptable segmentation foundation models such as SAM3 have demonstrated strong generalization capabilities through interactive and concept-based prompting. However, their direct applicability to medical image segmentation remains limited by severe domain shifts, the absence of privileged spatial prompts, and the need to reason over...

Stacked geometry concept for CosmicWatch based muon detectors in coincidence mode

CosmicWatch-based muon detectors are inexpensive, handheld, battery-powered, portable instruments designed to measure the flux of secondary muons produced when primary cosmic rays continuously strike the Earth's atmosphere. As these muons pass through the detector, plastic scintillators generate light, which is collected by silicon...

Optimal and Unbiased Fluxes from Up-the-Ramp Detectors under Variable Illumination

Near-infrared (NIR) detectors -- which use non-destructive readouts to measure time-series counts-per-pixel -- play a crucial role in modern astrophysics. Standard NIR flux extraction techniques were developed for space-based observations and assume that source fluxes are constant over an observation. However, ground-based telescopes...

FeudalNav: A Simple Framework for Visual Navigation

Visual navigation for robotics is inspired by the human ability to navigate environments using visual cues and memory, eliminating the need for detailed maps. In unseen, unmapped, or GPS-denied settings, traditional metric map-based methods fall short, prompting a shift toward learning-based approaches with minimal exploration. In...

Is open robotics innovation a threat to international peace and security?

Open access to publication, software and hardware is central to robotics: it lowers barriers to entry, supports reproducible science and accelerates reliable system development. However, openness also exacerbates the inherent dual-use risks associated with research and innovation in robotics. It lowers barriers for states and...

Efficient Quantum Circuits for the Hilbert Transform

The quantum Fourier transform and quantum wavelet transform have been cornerstones of quantum information processing. However, for non-stationary signals and anomaly detection, the Hilbert transform can be a more powerful tool, yet no prior work has provided efficient quantum implementations for the discrete Hilbert transform. This...

Critical points of the two-dimensional Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional with convergence of the phase-field energy

We consider a family $\{(u_\varepsilon, v_\varepsilon)\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ of critical points of the Ambrosio-Tortorelli functional. Assuming a uniform energy bound, the sequence $\{(u_\varepsilon, v_\varepsilon)\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ converges in $L^2(Ω)$ to a limit $(u, 1)$ as $\varepsilon \to 0$, where $u$ is in $SBV^2(Ω)$. It was...

Balanced allocation: considerations from large scale service environments

We study d-way balanced allocation, which assigns each incoming job to the lightest loaded among d randomly chosen servers. While prior work has extensively studied the performance of the basic scheme, there has been less published work on adapting this technique to many aspects of large-scale systems. Based on our experience in...

Unit-Consistent (UC) Adjoint for GSD and Backprop in Deep Learning Applications

Deep neural networks constructed from linear maps and positively homogeneous nonlinearities (e.g., ReLU) possess a fundamental gauge symmetry: the network function is invariant to node-wise diagonal rescalings. However, standard gradient descent is not equivariant to this symmetry, causing optimization trajectories to depend heavily...

Topic Modeling in New Physics Detection

In this work, we apply topic modeling to detect new physics in proton-proton collisions at the LHC in an unsupervised way. We investigate three new physics scenarios where fully leptonic $t\bar{t}\to b\bar{b}\ell^+\ell^-ν_\ell\barν_\ell$ is the main source of background without relying on jet substructure variables. We demonstrate...

Yet another doubly refined enumeration of Alternating Sign Matrices

Since the alternating sign matrix conjecture, proposed by Mills, Robbins, and Rumsey in 1982, was proved by Zeilberger and Kuperberg, several refined enumerations have been considered. In particular, Behrend et al. obtained a quadruply refined enumeration by adding certain parameters. In this paper, we revisit the doubly refined...

Building on the finite horizon recursive solution developed in a companion paper, we introduce the steady-state SiDAR and derive its tractable linear matrix inequality (LMI) with $O(n^3)$ complexity.
